| This “Painted Moments” exhibition by John Lautermilch features paintings glorifying one of the simple pleasures of life: the beauty and tranquility of a quiet lily pond. The light, color, and mood of a lily pond change throughout the day with changes in sunlight, breezes and other natural forces; but any one moment can be captured and immortalized in a painting. The same characteristics are reflected in his underwater scenes as well. | |

| David Andrew Midkiff, Ritual Vessel: Covered Bowl, ceramic vessels | |
|
Since the early history of humankind, people have performed special rites and rituals. Vessels to hold the elements essential in the execution of these ceremonies are important and necessary. Artists assumed the role of transforming ordinary containers into extraordinary ones befitting the significance and solemnity of these occasions. The clay objects exhibited in Earth and Fire, Opus 3 are ritual vessels, extraordinarily embellished containers, created for ceremonial use: The chalice, the flask, and the covered container. Each is fashioned to hold a special item or substance for a special occasion, rite, or observance. The use of wheel-thrown and hand built elements, highly-textured surfaces, and the ancient Japanese raku firing technique with its characteristic contrast between matte-black clay and glittering metallic glaze, results in heightened visual and tactile contrasts. Thus, these vessels take on an exotic nature, removed from the common and mundane. Although they function the same as any ordinary container, their resplendence elevates them as objects for high solemn purpose. |
