"Ridgley Hall",watercolor

Marilynne Bradley loves architecture. This exhibition of watercolors preserves her unique interpretations of former and present historic scenes in St. Louis. History plays important part in her life. This collection of paintings is part of the contents of her recently produced book “St. Louis in Watercolor”. This book is a compilation of information about borrowed ideas and famous firsts in St. Louis architecture. St. Louis is unique in its architectural heritage of being the first major metropolitan city west of the Mississippi. The architectural histories of many of the buildings are recreations or interpretations borrowed from other well-known structures around the world. Many of the ideas for new structures are the first of their kind. Artist, historian, Marilynne Bradley’s love for St. Louis architecture is reflected in her watercolors as a way of preserving these former and present historic scenes in St. Louis that may not last forever.

She will be available to autograph her book on opening night.

Each of her watercolors explores the subject from a different viewpoint, allowing a personal statement for each work of art. The paintings begin with blocking out the darks and details of the composition. The action of the brushwork is part of her energy to establish the movement of the subject matter. Design and vibrant colors dominate the perception of the compositions. Her paintings require experimentation, and variation both in content and technique. She begins to draw the forms with brushstrokes in an intense color. This drawing will hold the composition together. She builds up the values and patterns of shapes. Color, contrast and composition are the key elements to any of her paintings.
