James F. Wilson - Giverny Floating Lilies

"This show is really about an American experience. My family and I traveled extensively this summer and had many experiences. All have that which seems valid painting material. So, as the show developed all of these divergent subjects evolved at the same time. Defending this is hard except to say, that I think too many of us are trapped into hard line thinking about one concept. I want to enjoy life and my art works and don't really enjoy the idea of one barrel for each person. I am multifaceted and enjoy developing one idea after another. This work that is evolving is simply "painting & whatever that may bring."

Statement

I wish everyone could share in the joy of making this exhibition. At some point I began to think of pleasant places that I had visited or to visit. Admittedly there were some color ideas inherent in the choice of subjects that I chose, but for the most part they were just glorious places. Some of the paintings are about France and Giverny. I have been to France but never Giverny. I happened on to the work of Monet and became spellbound with the idea of ovals painted on watery planes. Then as the work progressed the foliage around and then color play became a basic constant.

We went to Disney World this summer for my children. I think maybe the parents had a better time. I did not want to like the place but came back affirmed that beautiful places can engender affection and delightful art work. So, some of the work here is about some objects I saw and that gave me joy in painting.

In the process of doing these images in watercolor and oil, some images came to mind that I could not avoid. So, I used them with some sense of humor. Basically, they have to do with the idea that Shamans were the first artists and we continue that tradition. I always want to go more inside my imagination and express my dreams. All of this work expresses the pleasure I have doing and dreaming art.
