My favorite compositions are derived from the beautiful Southern Illinois landscapes where I live. I begin my paintings without any preconceived outcomes in mind and let the work take its own course allowing me to enjoy both the process and painting that finally unfolds.”

My pottery has developed into three distinct but related lines. I make pots to hold my substantial collection of bonsai trees. I also make functional pots that I hope will be handled and used regularly. A good mug is a joy to make and a joy to use. This exhibit is focused on the third line of production, sculptural pieces that I generally refer to as “spirit houses”, after the remarkable small wooden houses made in Thailand. The Thai use them to attract and mollify local spirits that they hope will help and not hinder their lives. Many of my “spirit houses” are buildings, from towers, to cottages, to cathedrals. Although they may be inspired by actual buildings, they are not intended to be realistic replicas. Instead, they are meant to provide shelter for the thoughts, hopes, fears, or dreams that represent “spirits” in our society. Recently these have evolved into boats or boat forms, often with figures, suggesting travel or journeys. |
