About

With a name as paradoxical as Rick Penney's it's no wonder that this artist's talent is as seemingly contradictory as it is. Though completely self taught, he paints in a academically classical style, employing such a time-honored techniques as grisaille underpaintings and elaborate glazing. A master of the portrait, Penney is just as proficient with landscapes and wildlife. Capable of highly detailed renderings, he is just as apt to produce and immediate an impressionistic study. With his mature understanding of draftsmanship, composition, and color theory, his scrupulous adherence to historical fact and the laws of nature, Penny has never had difficulty finding an audience.

Growing up in a large family in rural Texas in the 1905's young Penney scrounged art supplies whenever he could. Financially unable to pursue a formal art education. he instead enlisted in the U.S. military and served a tour of duty. Consequently, Penney independently developed his technique by studying historic masters and refined it by association with the contemporary artist community, including his late cousin, Texas Regionalist, Otis Dozier.

An active member of the Santa Fe art community since 1988, Penney coordinated the Santa Fe Artist League's summer "Art Outdoors" program during it's 1992 and 1993 seasons. He also served as the League's President in 1994. Since beginning his professional career in 1971, he has worked in several areas of the commercial art field and has completed numerous public and private commissions.
