Artist's
Statement

I grew up in the late fifties and early sixties in the north of England, where I experienced a diluted version of things American. Occasionally I would see a Cadillac or a Disney film or listen to Elvis.

I spent years voraciously reading American comics. Long before I became a teenager I read Marvel comics and came across jazz for the first time. Anyone who has read the X-men will remember the Beast's alter ego who, when he didn't have his nose in a book, was often seen drinking coffee in the jazz clubs of Greenwich Village. Words like "syncopation" and "improvisation" entered my vocabulary.

As an artist, I'm intrigued by everything, but the thing that fascinates me the most is people. I never cease to be amazed by what people get up to. I'm always fascinated by the way people look and have to admit to be compulsive people watcher.

Then you can get technical -- the way the body is put together, the way it moves, its visual poetry. What makes someone beautiful? Conversely, what is ugly? Then you have the emotional element of people. The list goes on.
