Artist's Statement

I produce art because I feel the need to release emotions, learn to understand my surroundings, and ultimately feel the connection I have with the world around me.  It is with this expression that I create visual forms of art, using glass to engage viewers.

I feel a strong connection with the natural world that we all are a part of.  Sometimes I create art about our natural past, while other times I focus on current issues that are pulling us away from that purity.  I strive to keep myself connected to nature and would like to encourage others to do the same.

My bird people, part human part bird, represent the connection we have with all living things.  I give them a stance of pride and nobility as well as open wings stretching out to embrace the diversity that surrounds them.  In the piece "Bird Women with Salmon," the bird holds the fish with love.  She has caught her dinner, yet she has respect for all life and feels an important connection even with her adversaries.

If we can honor the natural cycles in life, the differences around us, and those we may see as enemies than our world could be a stronger place.  In drawing attention to the fact that we are all one in the same I hope to bring peace within our lives.

Bio

Julia Rogers was born in Brookings, Oregon in 1977.  She attended Oregon State University, 1996 to 2000, with art as her major.  When she discovered glassblowing in 2000, she left school to learn how to work with this new found material.

In 2001 she opened a glass studio with Richard Langley called Cloud Cap Glass, in Florence Montana.  This studio operated until 2003.  Then in 2004 she and artist Robin Rogers opened The Missoula School of Hot Glass where she made her artwork and taught classes.
In 2006 she enrolled in the glass program at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL, and received her BFA in 2008.   She then attended Pilchuck Glass School as a teaching assistant for Richard Royal and currently she is a graduate student at Bowling Green State University studying glass under Scott Darlington.
