Artist's Statement
My personal interpretation of Sumi-e: a release of verve.
The sumi-e paintings are the result of a May 2001 seventeen-day tour of China. The tour included three sumi-e painting workshops in the city of Tianjin. The workshop experience gave me the feeling that I was visiting an old friend... I loved my workshop tools. The big felt pad, beautiful soft brushes, blue and white porcelain mixing pallet, velvety black ink and big sheets of rice paper ... What fun!
A visit to Claude Monet's home and garden has been my inspiration to consider Monet's interpretation of color as evident in nature. It is thought provoking when visiting Monet's home in the village of Giverny, France to think of his paintings being universally admired beyond the art world. I have approached this collection contemplating Monet's vision and merging that with the spirit of the Chinese method of Sumi-e painting.
