Artist Statement
My goal is to create forms that have both artistic and functional value. Using the fluid, dynamic medium of clay, and the interaction between clay, fire and glaze my work combines traditional forms with elements of sculpture and painting. I strive to reflect the relationship between the certainties and the mysteries of working with clay. My work is largely inspired by history... reinterpreting these historical references is my passion. While based in clay, these influences draw upon many observations... from nature and anthropology, to cultural observances such as tribal scarification, Maori tattooing and the Japanese tea ceremony. I am particularly interested in the formal aspects of creation: in getting each piece to work aesthetically. Balance, gesture and rhythm all must function within the structure of the work.
