Artist’s Statement
My personal interpretation of Sumi-e: a release of verve.
I was introduced to Sumi-e style painting in three workshops in Tianjin,
China, May 2001.
The convergence (concurrence) was what I felt when the Chinese professor
was explaining the Eastern approach to painting in opposition to what
he thought was the “Western way”. His explanation was that
the Eastern approach used inner energy that flowed into the brush as opposed
to the Western technique, which he perceived as bring methodical. The
feeling I had was that I was revisiting an “old friend”—
a method of painting I had used for many years.
A young Chinese girl in viewing my paintings asked if
the artist was Chinese. When I told her the paintings were mine, she said
that I had “captured the heart of the Chinese”. I felt honored
that she related to my paintings on that level.
