Currently, Cortney is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She has been awarded scholarships to the Pittsburgh Glass Center and Pilchuck Glass School to further her research with glass. ART Summery Line has always been an essential element in my work as an artist in all media I pursue. This body of work stems from an experiment that was suggested by a friend and fellow artist of creating a line in kilnformed glass that becomes more varied and expressive. These lines become the accent in the works of glass that are composed of patterns of straight lines.
The variability of the accentuated line in these glass pieces references a body of inkless intaglio prints I was making in 2001 that emphasized line as an implied landscape. In these glass pieces, the fluidity of the varied lines references waterscapes and horizon lines in a landscape. The patterns seen in the rest of the piece are influenced by domestic patterns seen in wallpaper or fabric – the landscape of our homes. In my artwork I am interested in the subtle variations to patterns and how they can establish connections with familiar patterns, memories and the viewer.
Unbound Layers Cortney Boyd and Nate Steinbrink originally met at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. They both went on to study glass at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and pursue careers in the arts. Recently Nate has been working in wood and when the suggestion of a combined exhibition was presented it seemed like the perfect opportunity to combine Nate's woodwork with Cortney's glass. The idea of layers fits well into this combination of media. The wood has inherent layers and glass can enhance the layers visually and add a layer of content with its properties of translucency and the ability to alter light
