Michael Frank
Painter
Biography
Michael Frank, who has been painting for more than 35 years, acquired his skills primarily by studying the works of the Hudson River School artists of the mid to late 1800s. It was not the exotic locations of their landscapes but rather their attention to detail, coloring and strong direction of light that attracted and inspired him. “The impression one gets in looking at the works of this group of artists, “Michael says, ”is of viewing a magical place while in a magical moment.” It is that impression that he strives to achieve in his paintings. Michael finds his subject matter in his worldwide travels but mainly in his hometown of St. Louis. Forest Park and Missouri Botanical Gardens offer him unlimited inspiration for subject matter.
Vision & Artistic Approach
Michael considers himself a representational luminous painter of landscapes and seascapes. He usually starts with the grisaille method of painting, with a monotone painting over a white or bright yellow canvas. Then he adds layer upon layer of colored glazes for a glowing effect.
Awards
Michael has won numerous awards for his art and is a juried member of the Greater St. Louis Artist Association. He is represented at the Componere Gallery of Art and several other galleries in the St. Louis area.
